Earth contains vast amounts of wonder and beauty. Flora and fauna can have a good deal of similarities and unbelievable characteristics. These similarities do not exclude orchids. A certain type of orchid resembles monkeys far greater than any other animal does. These flowers can be enjoyed by both lovers of plants and animals alike. The flowers are so incredible looking that you will not believe your eyes.

Over 30,000 varieties of orchids exist in the world. Some of these orchid varieties are simple flowers. However, some look very unique, such as the monkey orchid. The unique name makes a big difference amongst its family of plants. The name itself is the perfect description of the flower.

Usually found in forests of Peru and southeastern Ecuador, the Monkey Orchid is also known as Dracula Simia. These flowers are found deep in the forests in the clouds. They grow about 2,000 feet above sea level. The monkey faces on the flowers are combinations of its stems and low petals.

Carlyle A. Lueren, a botanist, is the person that gave the unique name to these flowers in 1978. He stated that their petals look like simians, which is a monkey. He also added that the flowers have a very citrusy smell which is similar to the scent of fresh oranges.

The Monkey Orchid can bloom at any time of the year and sometimes, they will even bloom one after the other. From this variety, there are also 118 different species which can all be found in Central America, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia. More than half of these different species are found in Ecuador.

If you want to grow these flowers at home, you might want to know that it’s not as easy as the rest of the flowers that you usually grow in your garden. Their preferred environmental conditions can be very specific. Usually, these flowers grow in high humidity up to 100%. Additionally, they require a colder temperature and low light.

The plants can grow up to 2 feet tall, and if you do decide to plant them, make sure that they’re in sphagnum moss. If you are a novice gardener, you might want to start planting other flowers before you get involved with these.
