A stye is a bump that forms on or in the lower or upper eyelid as the result of an infection in an oil gland at the edge of the eyelid. It can be irritating and painful.
They can occur inside or outside the eyelid, but bacteria that causes them can be found in the nose. For that reason, it is important to wash your hands after blowing or touching your nose, because if you forget and then rub your eye, you’ll be at risk to develop a stye.
There are two distinct types of styes that have different causes and treatments:
- Hordeolum and
A hordeolum occurs if it is blocked one of the sweat glands, which is found in the skin of the lid and base of the eyelashes.
A chalazion is a blockage of a meibomian gland, which forms a single row in each lid, with the body of the gland located inside the eyelid.
What are stye symptoms and signs?
The symptoms of a stye are:
- Foreign body sensation in the eye,
- Eye pressure, and
- Pain in the area of the bump.
- Blurred vision
Signs of a stye include:
- Presence of a lump or bump on the edge of the eyelid,
- Redness of the skin overlying the eyelid bump,
- Puffy and swelling and appearance of the eyelid.
Knowing that the styes are contagious, if you have it you should be extra careful not to share washcloths or pillowcases. For ladies is important to avoid makeup, they must toss all eye makeup, as the existing is likely infected with the stye-causing bacteria.
The Healthline suggests one of the best ways to treat a stye, with placing a damp, warm washcloth over the eye for 5- 10 minutes.
This treatment should be repeated 3 or 4 times daily until the stye disappear. As an alternative method to this treatment you can use a tea bag over the eyelid, while sitting and relaxing. According to Bustle healing with the tea bag is effective thanks to the antioxidant with serious anti-bacterial properties in the used tea, which fight the bacteria that causes infections of the affected area.
Additionally, Bustle sugests treating the stye with a mixture of turmeric and castor oil. This combination has potent anti-inflammatory properties that when applied directly to the stye can speed up recovery.
Healthline recommends very useful and safe way to clean the eyelid. You can prepare the mixture of tear free baby shampoo with warm water. You can use a cotton swab or clean washcloth and wipe carefully the eyelid with the mixture.
