The Food Safety News carried out a public study which showed that nearly 76% of all brands of honey available on the market had been processed using a process called ultra-filtration.
This filtration process removes the honey wax together with the pollen.
Manufacturers will state that this process is necessary to prevent the honey from crystallizing and to provide a longer shelf life. The pollen, however, is extremely important when we consume honey and contains all the nutrients that we need.
Researchers warn us that we should avoid this honey because, without its pollen, which may have been subject to contamination, we aren’t able to determine its quality and origin.
This is the case with honey from China, which is usually highly processed and contains many illegal antibiotics and metals. In addition, the honey’s benefits have all been neutralized and when it is sold, the origin is unknown.

- McDonald’s and KFC sell some types with no pollen.
- Walgreen’s and CVS pharmacy sells honey without pollen.
- Walmart sells Winnie the Pooh honey which has no pollen.
- About 77% of honey brands sold at Target, Costco and Sam’s Club have no pollen.
- Keep in mind that artificial honey is usually loaded with low-quality mead and glucose.
How you can detect and avoid fake honey:
- Natural honey should crystallize when refrigerated. This is a natural process and, if it doesn’t happen, it means the honey has probably been altered.
- If the label states fructose or glucose content, don’t buy the honey.
- One way to test honey is to put a few drops of iodine in a glass of water and then add honey. If it turns blue, it means that it has a high content of corn starch.
- Another way is to mix water, a few drops vinegar and honey. If this mixture starts to form foam, it means the honey has been processed with plaster.
- To find out if your honey has been processed, you can try to burn it with a match. If the honey lights up, it means that it is pure.
- Pure honey should not dissolve if you put a spoonful into a glass of water. The processed types of honey will usually blend with the water.
