Parents Still Lose Sleep Worrying About Grown Children, Study Confirms

One of the most important responsibilities that the parents are doing is taking care of their children and it can last regardless of their ages. They unreserved worry about their health, education, relationships, professional success, incomes, and wellbeing all the time.

The findings of the studies show that numerous parents are worrying and losing sleep even though their children are adults.

Amber J. Seidel of Penn, a professor at the State University analyzed the relationship between parent’s that worry over their children, and their sleep patterns. This study showed that this stress remains into the child’s maturity. According to Seidel much of the socialization in our cultures is focused on the family when children are younger.

He studied topics that help to understand how family continues to be a central part of their lives throughout adulthood, and he was focused on encouraging the family influences in all situations.

This study involved 186 heterosexual, middle-aged married couples. Here are the main questions of the study that the participants were asked:

  1. How much support do they offer?
  2. How stressed are they?
  3. How much sleep are they getting?

The answers of the couples were supposed to evaluate from companionship to financial assistance, on a scale of 1-8 (1 being daily and 8 less than once a year or not at all).

Rating the worry about their children was ranged on a scale from 1 to 5, and the same with the stress they experienced while helping their children. The reported duration of the sleep they get every night for women was an average of 6.66 hours, and their husbands 6.59.

According to the findings of the study, the relationship with adult children can differently affect the sleep quality of middle-aged women and men. The sleep of women was affected by anxiety about the support and the sleep of men was influenced by the stress of giving support.

The deficiency of sleep can have harmful effects on one’s health, and cause mood, learning, memory issues, and it can also reduce the reaction time.

The view of Seidel about the present stress is the inability to cope in healthy ways, which can lead to immune destruction.

Most people found their journal as a best friend if they start writing down their thoughts. This will not hurt anyone and they can express all their feelings.
