Nightshades are plants belonging to the Solanaceae family and are some of the most popular foods consumed today. This group of pants includes over 2,000 species, including potatoes, tomatoes, all types of peppers, and eggplant. The plants (not nightshades) that contain the same compounds are blueberries, goji berries, huckleberries, and ashwagandha.
Researchers believe that nightshades induce inflammation through a specific chemical known as solanine, which may actually irritate the gastrointestinal tract. Once it’s absorbed into the bloodstream, it can cause the destruction of the red blood cells that are responsible for oxygen-carrying.
Solanine (acetylcholinesterase inhibitor) acts to prevent the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) and can lead to an excessive build-up of ACh in nerve receptor sites. It is not water soluble, it is not destroyed by cooking, and not broken down inside the body but must be excreted as alpha-solanine, which is classified as a neurotoxin.
Nightshades Could Be Causing Your Arthritis Flare-Ups
An arthritis is one of the major problems attributed to nightshades, and many researchers believe that it is often misdiagnosed in people.
Even if not yet understood how the nightshade foods may remove calcium from bones and deposit it in soft tissue, they can do it and set the stage for arthritis. This is the reason why experts have recommended that all individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis or other joint problems eliminate nightshade foods from their diet.
According to Norman F. Childers, Ph.D., the founder of the Arthritis Nightshades Research Foundation, diet appears to be a factor in the etiology of arthritis. His founding is based on surveys of over 1400 volunteers during a 20-year period.
The people who suffer from arthritis or an arthritis-related disease (lupus, rheumatism, and other musculoskeletal pain disorders) may be affected by nightshades, because of their side effects.

– Potatoes (NOT sweet potatoes or yams)
– Goji berries
– Peppers (all varieties)
– Garden Huckleberry & Blueberries
– Pepino Melon
– The Homeopathic “Belladonna”
– Cayenne Pepper
Note: The condiments white/black pepper and peppercorns are NOT nightshades

- Over-the-counter medications containing potato starch as a filler
- Homeopathic remedies for Belladonna (deadly nightshade)
- Scopolamine and Atropine sleeping pills
- Edible flowers: Petunia, day jasmine, chalice vine, angel and devil’s trumpets
- Baking powders that contain potato starch
- Topical drugs for inflammation and pain that contain capsicum
- Vodka (made of potatoes)
- Don’t lick envelopes as many adhesives contain potato starch
When you purchase products read labels carefully because one small amount of an ingredient could sabotage everything you did right. Avoid the foods that use the generic term of spices or seasoning because you won’t know what is really in that food.
Three Month Challenge:
The three-month challenge will be the right way to know if nightshades negatively affect you. By avoiding all nightshades from the list for three months you will test your organism in its sensitivity. You should also read the labels of prescriptions, over the counter medications as well as numerous processed foods and see if they contain nightshades.
It is also a good idea to discuss with your pharmacist or a phone call to the manufacturer of your over the counter medicines. After three months you should start to reintroduce one nightshade at a time, taking notes of any aches, stiffness, pains, and loss of energy, respiratory problems, headaches or any other symptoms.
The result may be dramatically improvement of the quality of your daily health, as eliminating specific nightshades from your diet will be of great help.
